Drastic changes are difficult to maintain, especially when it comes to diet and lifestyle. For many of us, a long journey of subtle changes is a way more effective approach.
Now that I finally feel like I have a handle on my diet, I’ve been incorporating other aspects of healthy living, specifically detoxifying my home. This can be a daunting process. Everywhere we turn, we see a new warning of another potentially deadly or harmful ingredient. I don’t have the time or money to simultaneously throw away and replace all my commercial cleaning products, makeup, and cooking utensils today, but I’m taking gradual steps. Each time I run out of a product, I try to replace it with a natural, healthy, more eco-friendly version. This concept inspired the “Product Replacement” series of my blog.
Last week, I decided to conquer the plastic Tupperware dilemma. I couldn’t stop the nagging in my head of how bad plastic is for you, as I placed my quality, organic, home-cooked leftovers in my stained plastic containers. Plastic containers are known to contain chemicals, which can leak into your food, especially when heated. Regardless of whether you believe that plastics are bad for you, lets face it, eating from a seemingly never clean plastic container isn’t what I call appetizing.
Making this switch was easy. I trashed (recycled) the old gross plastic containers and replaced them with a glass set of multiple-sized containers. Initially, it was more expensive to purchase glass, but these containers will last longer, and therefore need to be replaced less often than their plastic counterparts. With this one simple change, my leftovers are actually appealing and I have the peace of mind that I’m being proactive about my health.
